Sustainability is a critical issue in the textiles and apparel industry. Can you elaborate on how companies can align their sustainability practices with global standards and consumer expectations for environmental responsibility?
Aligning sustainability practices with global standards and consumer expectations is very essential indeed. This involves complying with international regulations and certifications, ensuring transparency and traceability in the supply chain, and minimising environmental impact through resource optimisation, ethical sourcing, and innovation in materials and processes. Companies should also prioritise ethical labour practices and engage with consumers to raise awareness and drive demand for sustainable products. Continuous improvement and education are key to fostering a culture of sustainability and building trust in the brand’s commitment to environmental responsibility, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable future for the industry and the planet.
How do you view India’s role and potential as a key apparel sourcing destination in the global market, especially in terms of quality, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability?
Firstly, India boasts a rich heritage of textile craftsmanship, offering high-quality products that meet international standards. With a skilled workforce and access to diverse raw materials, Indian manufacturers can produce a wide range of garments tailored to consumer preferences. Secondly, India’s cost-effectiveness stems from competitive labour costs and operational efficiencies, making it an attractive option for companies seeking to optimise production costs without compromising quality. Additionally, India’s commitment to sustainability is evident through initiatives promoting eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient production processes, and ethical labour practices. With increasing consumer demand for sustainable fashion, India’s focus on sustainability further enhances its appeal as a sourcing destination.
Given the current geo-political situation, including the Red Sea crisis, what steps should the Indian government take to safeguard the interest of domestic exporters?
In response to geopolitical challenges, the Indian government can take many proactive steps to safeguard our interests like aiding in diversifying trading partners to reduce reliance on specific markets, improving infrastructure to enhance supply chain resilience, and promoting free trade agreements to facilitate smoother trade flows. Further financial support and incentives can alleviate the burden on exporters, while diplomatic efforts can help resolve trade disputes and ease barriers. By implementing these measures, the government can bolster the resilience of domestic exporters and ensure sustained growth in international markets amidst geopolitical uncertainties.
